e2emonit

Overview

e2emonit provides tools for the measurement of end-to-end network performance, therefore giving results that are directly relevant to end users of the network.

Components

Measurement Tools

Three active tools (PingER, Iperf and UDPmon) are used for the measurement of the most relevant metrics (RTT, TCP and UDP Throughput, UDP and ICMP Packet Loss) between defined sites on the network. The measurements are triggered by crontabs which are configured to run the tests on a rotating basis within a star topology (such as the LCG Tier0-Tier1 configuration), to avoid overlapping measurements. The results of the measurements are published into R-GMA for access by the NPM client tools.

Configuration Tools

The active measurements are generally triggered by cron jobs using parameters contained in an e2emonit configuration file. Tools are provided with e2emonit to help with setting up the tools to monitor an extended infrastructure. They include a tool which downloads the configuration file from a central repository and checks for new versions of this file, and a tool to setup the cron jobs to avoid overlapping measurements (currently meant for a star topology of sites).

Data Gathering

The data produced by the e2emonit measurement tools is gathered and inserted into a database, making use of R-GMA.

Data Access

A web-service provides access to the data collected in R-GMA. This web-service has been developed to provide standards compliant access to the network measurement data, providing an interface that is compliant with the OGF NM-WG standard.
